The Hygiene and Sanitation Specialist will be responsible for designing and implementing strategies to promote menstrual hygiene and sanitation practices among women and girls in rural areas. The role will focus on improving community understanding of hygiene practices, providing technical expertise on safe and effective menstrual hygiene management (MHM), and supporting the production of sanitary products. The Specialist will also play a crucial role in developing educational materials, conducting training, and advising on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions related to menstrual health.

Main Responsibilities:

Technical Support on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM):

  • Provide technical expertise in menstrual hygiene management, focusing on safe, sustainable, and context-appropriate practices for women and girls in rural areas.
  • Design and deliver MHM training sessions for women, girls, community leaders, and local healthcare workers.
  • Develop and promote the use of safe, reusable, and affordable menstrual hygiene products.

Training & Capacity Building:

  • Train community members, health workers, and school staff on best practices for menstrual hygiene, including personal hygiene, disposal methods, and infection prevention.
  • Develop training materials, guidelines, and toolkits on menstrual hygiene management for distribution in schools and communities.
  • Support capacity-building efforts for local trainers and women’s groups to ensure the project’s sustainability.

Hygiene Awareness Campaigns:

  • Lead hygiene and sanitation awareness campaigns in communities, schools, and health centers, emphasizing the importance of menstrual health, clean water, and proper sanitation.
  • Develop culturally appropriate awareness-raising materials such as leaflets, posters, and radio messages to reach different community segments.
  • Work with the Community Mobilizers to ensure wide dissemination of messages and active participation of women and girls in the campaigns.

WASH Infrastructure Support:

  • Provide guidance on the installation and maintenance of water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities (e.g., handwashing stations, latrines) to support menstrual hygiene in schools and community centers.
  • Ensure that facilities are designed and implemented to meet the specific needs of women and girls, particularly in terms of privacy, cleanliness, and menstrual hygiene.

Monitoring & Evaluation of Hygiene Practices:

  • Work closely with the MEAL Officer to monitor the adoption of improved hygiene and sanitation practices within the community.
  • Track the impact of MHM interventions on women and girls’ health, attendance at school, and participation in community activities.
  • Provide recommendations for improving hygiene and sanitation outcomes based on data and field observations.

Collaboration & Coordination:

  • Collaborate with the Project Coordinator, Community Mobilizers, and local partners to ensure that hygiene activities align with overall project goals.
  • Work with local health authorities and organizations to integrate menstrual hygiene management into existing WASH programs.
  • Support the establishment of Women Self-Help Groups for the production and marketing of Menstrual Hygiene Products
  • Act as a key liaison with the community, ensuring that hygiene-related activities are relevant, inclusive, and responsive to local needs.

Reporting & Documentation:

  • Document and report on the outcomes of hygiene interventions, including success stories, challenges, and best practices.
  • Contribute to project reports, including technical input on WASH and hygiene activities for donor reporting.
  • Maintain records of all training, campaign activities, and infrastructure improvements related to hygiene and sanitation.

Safeguarding:

  •  Ensure protection and inclusivity of marginalized groups 
  • Make Safeguarding refresher session an integral part of all capacity building sessions
