Job Description: Orthopedic Surgeon

Qualifications & Experience:

Education: MBBS and FCPS in Orthopedic Surgery (if a person possessing FCPS is not available, then MCPS or other equivalent qualifications recognized by PMDC)

Experience: Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in orthopedic surgery, including both clinical practice and surgical procedures.

Job Summary:

The Orthopedic Surgeon is responsible for the management and administration of the Orthopedic Unit, ensuring the delivery of optimal standards of care. The scope of work includes outpatient department (OPD) duties, admission of patients requiring indoor care, management of admitted patients, and performing surgeries on specific days.

Duties / Responsibilities:

1. Curative / Clinical

  • Overall, in charge of the Orthopedic Surgical OPD and admitted patients.
  • Conducts Surgical OPD regularly on notified days and times.
  • Reviews referrals by Medical Officers (MOs), other Specialists, and lower facilities to establish diagnoses and proper management plans.
  • Plans and performs surgeries on specified days and times as per hospital policy.
  • Performs emergency surgeries on patients admitted through the Accident & Emergency (A&E) Department as and when required.
  • Writes postoperative notes and instructions for each case.
  • Takes one planned round of the wards daily with all departmental doctors and staff nurses to review/follow-up on old cases and examine newly admitted patients. Repeats rounds with or without the MO in charge of the ward if required.
  • Supervises and ensures the preparation of the Operation Theater (OT) list by the MO/WMO.
  • Ensures that prescribed treatments are being administered to patients
  • Ensures the availability of medicines and the functioning of equipment to handle emergencies at all times in the department if entrusted with additional responsibility
  • Attends to patients with orthopedic surgical problems admitted in other wards as required.
  • Explains the use and effects of prescribed drugs to patients.
  • Refers patients to other specialists within the hospital and/or to higher-level facilities if needed.
  • Trains medical, nursing, and paramedical staff as per departmental/specialty requirements, protocols, and work instructions.

2. Preventive / Promotive:

  • Ensures compliance with SOPs, particularly on Infection Control and Waste Management in the OPD and Surgical Ward.
  • Ensures that instruments/equipment used in examinations and procedures are properly sterilized
  • Ensures that all staff participating in procedures are physically protected by wearing proper dress (i.e., gowns, masks, caps, gloves, and shoes).
  • Provides educational information about common diseases and ways to promote physical health.

3. Rehabilitative:

  • Call Recommends physiotherapy and other rehabilitative measures to needy patients.

4. General:

  • Remains on after working hours.
  • Checks the punctuality of the staff attached to the section.
  • Checks the cleanliness and upkeep of the unit.
  • Controls the scheduled functioning of various doctors in the unit.
  • Ensures that responsible staff regularly maintains electro-medical equipment to ensure functionality at all times
  • Ensures that responsible staff regularly supplies/replenishes medicines and stores.
  • Ensures the preparation and implementation of the duty roster for the unit.
  • Provides technical assistance to management for the purchase of new equipment/instruments as needed.
  • Checks that subordinate staff performs their duties as per JDs, SOPs, and SMPs
  • Writes objective performance evaluation reports of subordinate staff (if required).
  • Performs outreach duties to lower facilities as required.
  • Performs any other professional duty assigned by the in-charge.
