• To give maximum support and assistance to the scrub person.
  • To ensure that the surgical team is equipped with every necessary item to perform the operation efficiently.
  • To use equipment and supplies economically and conservatively.
  • Patients safety, welfare and comfort is priority one.
  • Prepare operations theater before the start of surgeries.
  • Check that all operating microscopes and surgical lights are in good working order.
  • Turn on operating microscope lights at the appropriate time and adjust microscope when necessary.
  • Open the outside wrapper of sterile packs.
  • Receive patient in the operation theater and help the patient on to the operating table.
  • Ensure that the patient’s eye is fully dilated and local anesthesia has been given.
  • Ensure that the patient is positioned correctly.
  • Read the patient file and inform about the eye of the patient.
  • Ensure that the correct size gloves are available for surgeon and tie his gown.
  • Place phaco / vasectomy and microscope pedals near to the surgeon feet.
  • Place dust bin in a convenient manner to receive waste.
  • Check biometry and IOL power before operating the IOL.
  • Provide IOL when surgeon asks for it.
  • Have immediately available any other equipment or supplementary items which may be needed.
  • Watch the progress of the operation, anticipate needs and react quickly to urgency.
  • Inform theatre supervisor about unusual events.
  • Keep informed of the progress, so that the next case can be advanced or delayed.
  • Count with the scrub nurse, the instruments before completion of the operation.
