Evaluation of Fatigue Characteristics of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement Binders

Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) can be called as leader in recycled materials throughout the whole modern world. Recycled or Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement is a better choice for incorporating into hot mix asphalt mixes. RAP is a term that is being used to describe rot milled or reprocessed asphalt paving materials containing aggregates and asphalt. RAP has been incorporated into pavements successfully and efficiently for many years and provides a key saving for natural resources in developed world. As a fact, every year approximately 90 million tons of reclaimed asphalt pavements are recycled and reused, nearly twice as much as the collective sum of recycled paper, glass, plastic and aluminum. Pakistan, my country is currently passing through a crucial situation, trying really hard to cope with infrastructure development and economic crisis. There are many highways and motorways which needs rehabilitation and maintenance after every few years. They are being replaced with newer layer, wasting the old Asphalt Pavement. The part of our project is M-2 motorway. Rehabilitation of M-2 motorway is under-going now-a-days. Sample of RAP is taken from M-2 motorway. Its extensive study and detailed testing is being carried out in labs in order to evaluate their characteristics of fatigue and then comparison of results will be made at later stages. Basic testing of RAP binder is being performed before proceeding towards the advanced testing of binder extracted from RAP. Modern tests such as Bending Beam Rheometer , Direct Tension Tester and Dynamic Shear Rheometer will be performed after basic testing of RAP binder. Quality of RAP Binder will be checked and compared with virgin binder in order to have final findings.
