Mobile sector of Pakistan observed an astonishing growth during years 2001 to 2011. Subscribers were purchasing mobile SIMs from mobile operators’ service outlets, retailers and authorized franchises. There had been no restriction on number of SIMs to be registered under a specific CNIC as a result of which a subscribers registered more than one SIM. The situation led to a security concern, where a SIM registered under one subscriber(s) was being used by another un-identified user.
In order to address the potential associated risks, PTA decided to develop “SIM Information & verification system” by using which mobile subscribers are able to find out the total number of SIM(s) registered against their respective CNIC number with each mobile operator of the country. The system has facilitated mobile subscribers to block those SIM(s) which presently are not under their usage.
25.6 Million unique National ID cards have been verified against 80.7 Million SIMs to-date. Almost 16 Million unverified SIMs have been blocked and 3.5 Million SIMs are being evaluated & re-verified. Despite heavy load from the users, system responds to queries within seconds and no down time has yet been observed since its official launching in May 2010
A five day Internet Exchange Point (IXP) workshop was organized by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) from 18 to 22 April, 2016, at PTA headquarters, Islamabad. The workshop was aimed to educate Pakistani ISPs and Mobile phone operators to understand commercial and technical aspects of IXP.
